Beautiful and Powerful: Audi's E-Bike Wörthersee

The prototype combines a electric and muscle power.

The airy frame boasts a low center of gravity and a compact overall volume. In this way, the e-bike is superbly agile at the sporty handling limits. The lithium-ion battery is incorporated into the frame and needs 2.5 hours to fully charge. On long trial tours, only a few simple steps are required to remove the battery and replace it with a charged one.

The frame and the swinging arm that holds the back wheel are made of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP). The same material is used for the 26" wheels, which feature an innovative "Audi ultra blade" design with broad flat spokes for an optimized transmission of pedal power. "We were able to demonstrate with the choice of materials just how closely design goes hand in hand with expertise in ultra lightweight construction," Hendrik Schaefers comments.

The cyclist can choose between a total of five cycling modes - pure muscle power, the electric motor alone, or pedaling supported by the electric motor. In the "Pure" mode, the drive power is purely the product of the cyclist's legs, while in "Pedelec" mode you are supported by the electric motor that then makes speeds of up to 80 km/h (50 mph) possible and gives you a range of 50-70 kilometers (31-44 miles). If you select "eGrip", the Audi e-bike W rthersee runs solely on the electric motor and can reach a top speed of 50 km/h (31 mph). The cyclist then controls forward momentum using a gripshift and can configure the power as desired using the computer.

The electric motor is located at the lowest point on the frame and drives the bottom bracket shaft directly. The maximum torque delivered to the rear wheel is 250 Nm (184.39 lb-ft). The electric motor generates a maximum output of 2.3 kW, a new world best for e-bikes. The complete bike excluding electrical components weighs in at 11 kg (24.25 lb), equivalent to a power-to-weight ratio of 9 kg (19.84 lb) per kilowatt, or 7 kg (15.43 lb) per horsepower - another record-breaking value.

When performing wheelies, an electronic control system support the rider when performing tricks and back-wheel biking. Different modes can be set using a smartphone or directly on the e-bike - either "Power Wheelie" mode, with adjustable wheelie angle for less skilled bikers or "Balanced Wheelie" mode for sporting challenges. In "Balanced Wheelie" mode, the electronic control system maintains the rider's balance, by compensating the biker's movements forwards or backwards via the electric motor. This means the rider can influence the bike's speed by shifting weight: if you lean forwards the bike picks up speed, and if you lean back it slows. You select "Training" mode if you want to keep your performance constant for training purposes.Source:

Electric Highway of The Future (video)

The eHighway concept is the electrification of trucks and select highway lanes via overhead electrified wires similar to how modern day trolleys or streetcars are powered on many city streets. However, personally I do not believe this will be widely used as inductive charging also known as non-contact charging will gain ground. At least I hope it does because having wires all along highways seems so primitive.

Kidz Gear Expands Headphone Lineup for Kids with New Volume Limit Headphones

Kidz Gear today announced a new lineup of Kidz Gear KidzControl headphones, which are volume limited headphones designed for children. Previously the company only offered its headphones in gray, but now they are available in a range of bright, kid-friendly colors.

The headphones are compatible with all devices that use a 3.5mm audio jack, including Apple's iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch.

Children have sensitive ears and may not be accustomed to properly utilizing volume buttons, so the KidzControl headphones are limited to a safe 80 percent of the maximum volume output capable from audio devices currently on the market. Strategy Analytics: Apple could launch ‘iPhone Mini’ next year to blunt Samsung market share threat

“Is an ‘iPhone Mini’ on the horizon? Strategy Analytics analyst Neil Mawston thinks so. But why?” Lance Whitney writes for CNET.

“Samsung has been the clear winner in the smartphone wars, with Apple playing second fiddle,” Whitney writes. “And that lead may wider further in 2013.”

MacDailyNews Take: “Clear winner” in unit share, Lance. Apple is the clear winner in profit share (see: Apple utterly dominates mobile device market with 6% market share - and 77% of the profits). Now, which would you rather have?

Don’t be a dummy, Lance.

In this case, “market share” is unit share, not profit share. It’s only one metric and not even the most important one. Apple owns the profit in the modern smartphone industry and has the loyal customers willing pay for apps and who are most desired by developers and advertisers. All Samsung has are empty unit share figures from dumping Buy One Get X Free fake iPhones into the market and a bunch of disengaged customers (many of whom do not even use the phone for much beyond phone calls) who’ll dump Samsung in a split second to save a nickel.

Apple doesn’t want crap customers. Developers don’t want crap customers. Advertisers don’t want crap customers. Accessory makers don’t want crap customers. Samsung et al. can have them.

Look up “winning” in the dictionary, Lance, lest you continue to sound like an idiot.

Whitney writes, “The Korean handset maker has the edge over Apple in large part because it ‘plays in more segments,’ Mawston told Reuters, allowing it to ‘capture more volume than Apple.’ To fight back, Apple may try to win over a larger base of consumers by launching a smaller, cheaper variant of the iPhone, dubbed the ‘iPhone Mini’ by the analyst.”

Read more in the full article here.

MacDailyNews Take: Strategy Analytics has a fundamental lack of understanding about what motivates Apple Inc. and how they approach markets.

Apple wants to delight customers, not scrape the bottom of the barrel in an empty quest to pad unit share numbers.

Again, for those who haven’t been paying attention for the past three decades: Apple sells premium products at premium prices to premium customers.

How Apple’s Safari browser started life as ‘Alexander’ and hid itself from the world

“Don Melton, who was originally tasked by Scott Forstall to create WebKit and the Safari browser for OS X, and later WebKit of iOS, has retired from his job as engineering director of internet technologies, and begun writing,” Rene Ritchie reports for iMore. “In keeping Safari a secret, Melton talks about how his team had to hide Safari’s user agent string, so the project could remain a secret until Steve Jobs announced it at Macworld 2003.”

For much of the time we spent developing Safari - long before it was called by that name - it pretended to be Microsoft Internet Explorer. Specifically, Internet Explorer for Mac, which Apple had provided with the OS since 1998. Less than six months before Safari debuted, it started pretending to be a Mozilla browser.
